Welfare to Opportunity
The Problem
The UK has a welfare system that inadvertently traps individuals in dependency rather than incentivising work. Long-term dependency, high economic inactivity, and systems that sometimes penalise work have left large numbers outside the labour market even while employers report shortages.
The Solution
Welfare should act as a temporary springboard, not a permanent ceiling. Support must be tied to skills development and active job-seeking. Shifting emphasis from passive support to skills, incentives, and pathways into work addresses both individual and fiscal costs.
The Benefit
It restores dignity and purpose to the individual, fills domestic labor shortages, and drastically reduces the national welfare bill, allowing funds to be redirected to other vital services. Benefits include higher employment, reduced long-term welfare expenditure, greater personal dignity, and a larger productive workforce.
